How Often Do Your Eyes Feel Sore & Tired?

Whether you’re trying to complete a last-minute assignment or you want to play one more level before bed, digital devices can leave your eyes feeling irritated, sore, and tired.

We rely on computers, tablets, and phones to make it through most of our days, but many of us don’t always consider the impact these devices can have on our eye comfort. With the help of our team, you can get back to enjoying clear, comfortable vision when using your favorite digital device.

Find out how we can help, and please book your appointment today.

What is Computer Vision Syndrome?

Computer vision syndrome, also known as digital eye strain, is an uncomfortable eye condition that may occur when you use a digital device for a long time.

However, you may still experience symptoms even if you aren’t using a digital device. Activities like reading, writing, or driving for long periods can also strain your eyes, leading to symptoms like:

  • Wateriness
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Sore neck and shoulders
  • Headaches

How to Find Relief

We always recommend having an eye exam before you start looking for relief on your own. Certain eye strain symptoms may be a sign of a different eye problem, and we want to make sure your eyes are getting the right treatment.

However, if your symptoms are from eye strain, you may find relief with:

The 20/20/20 Rule

The 20/20/20 rule is a simple way to help reduce eye strain and get back at the task at hand. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for about 20 seconds.

This break gives your eyes a chance to blink, readjust, and find some comfort before you get back to work.

There are many types of eye drops available to help with eye strain symptoms. However, we always recommend having an eye exam before using any over-the-counter products.

In some cases, we may be able to prescribe medicated eye drops to address your specific needs.

Adjusting your workplace ergonomics can also help reduce eye strain symptoms.

When you sit at your desk, make sure:

  • Your screen’s brightness matches the room you are in.
  • Your screen is angled away from light sources that could cause glare.
  • You sit in a position where your screens are 20 degrees below eye level and about an arm’s length away.
