Consultations & Co-Management

Consultations

Before you can have laser eye surgery, you must first have a consultation with our team. Our consultation process includes a fully comprehensive eye exam to determine if your eyes are healthy candidates for surgery.

Laser eye surgery can help correct refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. While it’s safe for most patients, some eye conditions can affect your eye’s candidacy. These could include:

Laser eye surgery doesn’t guarantee 20/20 vision. While 90% of patients report improved vision after the surgery (sometimes to 20/20 or 20/40), many still require eyeglasses or contacts to perform certain tasks.

Once we determine that you’re a candidate for laser eye surgery, we can refer you to an ophthalmologist to perform the procedure.

Our team is here to co-manage your recovery process with your ophthalmologist to ensure your eyes heal correctly following the surgery. We’ll schedule a series of follow-up appointments and monitor any side effects you may experience. Common side effects include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Glare and halos
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye discomfort

Many of these symptoms are normal to the healing process. However, if your symptoms seem to be getting worse, please contact our team for help immediately.

What Is LASIK?

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) eye surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries performed in the country and can correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

During the procedure, your ophthalmologist numbs your eyes before making a small incision in the outermost layer of your cornea, creating a flap. This flap is then gently folded over on a hinge to give your surgeon access to the underlying corneal tissue, called the corneal stroma. Using a precise laser called an excimer laser, your ophthalmologist reshapes this tissue to your desired prescription.

The flap is then placed back into its original position to heal over the next few weeks.

What is PRK?

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a laser eye surgery procedure similar to LASIK but with some differences. PRK reshapes your corneal tissue using an excimer laser. However, unlike LASIK, PRK completely removes your eye’s outermost layer, the epithelium, to grant access to your corneal stroma. After the surgery, your epithelial layer will heal over several days.
