Get Help Managing Your Child’s Eye Health

There’s nothing quite like watching your child discover the world as they grow up. From their first steps on the playground to when they cross the stage at graduation, your child relies on their vision to help them navigate and interact with the world around them. Because of this, it’s important to know your child’s visual needs and where its weaknesses may be.

Uncorrected vision problems can affect your child’s quality of life, including their performance at school or playing sports.

We can help detect these issues early and provide your child with solutions to help them confidently rely on their vision as they grow up. All you have to do is book an appointment. We can help with the rest.

How Often Should Your Child Have an Eye Exam?

Your child will hit several different visual milestones throughout their life where their vision might undergo the most changes. It’s important for your child to have an eye exam during each of these milestones to help ensure their eyes are developing as expected.

These milestones include:

Toddler (1 to 2 Years Old)

Your child should have their first eye exam with us after their first birthday. It’s essential to know how their eyes are developing around this point, so we will perform various tests to determine their visual sharpness and overall eye health. We’ll also examine their eye’s functional skills like eye tracking and depth perception.

There may be a higher chance of developing an eye issue as your child reaches 3 years old. Eye issues like amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed-eyes) are known to develop around this age. Leaving these vision problems uncorrected could lead to permanent vision problems.

Your child should start having annual eye exams just before beginning the first grade. Problems like amblyopia and strabismus may still develop around this time, and your child also has a risk of developing myopia (nearsightedness). Undiagnosed vision problems can affect their ability with school or sports.

Common Pediatric Eye Issues

Myopia

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is an eye condition that affects your child’s distance vision. Myopia occurs when the eye elongates over time, preventing light from reaching the retina and causing blurry distance vision.

Myopia can continue to progress if left uncontrolled, as the eye may read light signals as a sign to elongate further. There are several ways to manage your child’s myopia, and we can help find a solution that fits their comfort and lifestyle.

Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is a common eye condition that causes one eye to wander. This condition can occur for various reasons, but leaving it uncorrected could lead to permanent vision problems.

Amblyopia doesn’t go away with age, but we can help manage it with corrective lenses or vision therapy techniques like prisms, patches, or eye exercises.

Strabismus, also known as crossed-eyes, is an eye condition that can cause both of your child’s eyes to wander simultaneously. It may occur due to uncorrected vision errors or poor eye muscle control.

As strabismus develops, your child may experience double vision or poor depth perception. In advanced cases, their brain may ignore images from their “weaker” eye.

Like amblyopia, strabismus doesn’t go away with age. Our team can help manage your child’s symptoms with corrective lenses or vision therapy.

Conjunctivitis, more generally known as pink eye, is common enough that many parents can expect their child to experience a case at some point in their life.

Pink eye is an eye condition that can occur for various reasons, but some versions of it are highly contagious and can easily spread between children in daycare, pre-school, and beyond. Despite what may cause your child’s particular case, pink eye usually presents the same symptoms, including:

  • Redness
  • Mucusy discharge
  • Itchiness
  • Grittiness
  • Tearing

If your child has signs of pink eye, please contact us immediately. We can find solutions to help soothe their symptoms and get them back to enjoying their eyesight comfortably.
